Adult Forum Memories

Are you trying to remember who led us on that specific interesting topic a few years ago? Might you be trying to remember a speaker which you wish we would invite back to lead our class again? Wondering where the next appointment or the quest for tenure led someone who once led our class? Follow the hyperlinks to see where they are now! You remember the speaker but wish for a reminder of their topic of the day?

Here are some memories we have of Adult Forum classes and other Adult Education events, and you can help us fill in the gaps.

October 20, 2019 Anna Carter Florence, Ph.D., Peter Marshall Professor of Preaching at Columbia Theological Seminary, and guest preacher in Duke Chapel Reading the Verbs

Looking for ways to breathe new life into your reading and interpretation of Scripture? In this workshop, Anna Carter Florence offers a fresh way to read Scripture in community - by entering it, encountering it, and coming back with something deep and true. What if we imagined ourselves as a repertory church, reading and rehearsing these biblical texts together, over time? What if Scripture was a text that needed to be practiced as well as studied? What if we learned to rehearse it until we find the script in the Scripture - our script? And what if people who fundamentally disagreed with one another could gather around Scripture in this way, and enjoy doing it? Maybe we could stop fighting about what the text means, and start listening to it, and one another - with real appreciation! Maybe we could find something true before we have to decide what's right.

Join us to discover some new strategies for reading Scripture that are easy to grasp and easy to adapt to any setting. We'll learn to "read the verbs" in a biblical text as we walk through it, together. Based on her new book, Rehearsing Scripture: Discovering God's Word in Community, this workshop will be a lively and energizing deep-dive into Scripture.

November 17, 2019 The Rev. Amanda Highben The Vocation of the Saints: Set Free in Christ to Serve our Neighbors

Prior to the Reformation, the Roman Catholic church taught that only those who undertook monastic orders possessed vocations and served God through their work in the church. This idea reinforced a rigid hierarchy between celibate priests and a married shoemaker, for example, wherein the "holy" priest was closer to God in light of his call. But Martin Luther and the Reformers broke open this repressive system by teaching that all Christians have a sacred calling; be they single or married, professors or plumbers, retired seniors or parents at home caring for their children, Christ's followers serve God and their neighbors in diverse and unexpected ways. Join us as we dig into a deeper understanding of vocation and discern how Jesus calls us to embody his radical love for others through our everyday lives and work.

December 1, 2019 The Rev. Ismael Ruiz-Millan, director of the Hispanic House of Studies, Global Education, and Intercultural Formation at Duke Divinity School, and guest preacher in Duke Chapel The Right Posture for Holy Relationships through Cultural Humility

The political environment as well as the rhetoric and acts of hate in our society makes it difficult for any person to engage in authentic ways with our community. We are so cautious that we prevent ourselves from meaningful and holy friendships - we prevent ourselves from being a good neighbor. Ecclesial spaces are not the exception, we are often very careful of not having "the wrong people" in our pews, that instead of becoming exemplars of holy relationships, we often become exclusive spaces. In this class, by taking a close look to the principles of cultural humility, participants will learn about the posture needed in order to be a good neighbor that fosters holy relationships.
