The Congregation at Duke University Chapel

Eating for the Kingdom of God

Registration needs to be completed by April 1. The overnight retreat combines education, fellowship, and renewal to create a wonderful weekend. The retreat will begin on Saturday morning, June 3 and conclude after lunch on Sunday, June 4; participants may arrive on Friday night to simply relax. Caraway Camp and Conference Center in Asheboro will again provide the location for this retreat.

The theme for the 2017 retreat is Eating for the Kingdom of God. Dr. Norman Wirzba, Professor of Theology, Ecology, and Agrarian Studies at Duke Divinity School and Senior Fellow at the Kenan Institute for Ethics will be the retreat leader. Norm Wirzba During the weekend participants will consider how eating is one of the most practical and regular ways we have for witnessing to God's kingdom. How we grow food, how we buy food, and what we eat - each reflects what we believe about the world and the meaning of our life together. This weekend we will explore what is happening in agriculture and food systems, and then think together how the eating we do can reflect God's desire that all creatures be nurtured and well cared for. We will read scripture and share personal stories about what food means to us and why it matters that we attend to issues like hunger and food justice. And we will consider how the Eucharist helps inspire a faithful and joyful eating life.
