The Congregation at Duke University Chapel

The Deuteronomic Question

Registration needs to be completed by April 1. The overnight retreat combines education, fellowship, and renewal to create a wonderful weekend. The retreat will begin on Saturday morning, June 2 and conclude after lunch on Sunday, June 3; participants may arrive on Friday night to simply relax. Caraway Camp and Conference Center in Asheboro will again provide the location for this retreat.

Our presenter for the 2018 retreat is Dr. Stephen B. Chapman, Associate Professor of Old Testament at Duke Divinity School. photo of Dr. ChapmanA proponent of theological interpretation, Professor Chapman has studied, lectured, and taught internationally in a variety of academic and church settings. His work focuses on the formation of the biblical canon, the nature of the Old Testament as scripture, the dynamics of biblical narrative, the challenge of biblical violence, and the history and use of the Old Testament within the Christian tradition and Western culture.

What does it mean to be God’s people in a new land? This is the concern to which Deuteronomy seeks to respond. What can be gained from its ancient wisdom as we strive to be the people of God in our own time and place? Planned in conjunction with the Chapel’s summertime focus on Deuteronomy, the retreat provides participants with an engaging and fun opportunity to learn more about a very important book of the Bible and its vision for a covenant community. Deuteronomy offers guidance on surprisingly contemporary issues confronting the church, such as the relationship between tradition and change, pilgrimage and citizenship, individual freedom and communal justice, following God and loving God.
